Head of Department History (with Politics)

MPS/ UPS, plus TLR2B

Head of History & Politics
Herne Bay High School
Salary: Upper Pay Scale (UPS) plus TLR2B

Inspire curiosity. Develop critical thinkers. Lead a subject that matters.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious Head of History & Politics who can bring the past to life and inspire students to understand the world around them.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead a popular subject, shape its future and work with colleagues who share your commitment to excellent teaching. Whether you are an experienced subject leader or an accomplished teacher ready for your next step, we would love to hear from you.

The opportunity

History is a popular choice at GCSE and A Level at Herne Bay High School. As Head of History & Politics, you will build on this interest, creating a learning experience that challenges, engages and supports students across Key Stages 3–5.

You will lead the day-to-day management and development of History, working closely with the Politics Curriculum Lead to support the continued development of Politics at Key Stage 5. You will ensure that students encounter an ambitious, coherent curriculum that builds their knowledge and confidence, encourages debate and develops their ability to evaluate evidence and form reasoned judgements.

Reporting to the Head of Faculty, you will have the opportunity to influence faculty priorities, contribute to improvement planning and support colleagues in developing their practice. You will use assessment information, student work and professional dialogue to identify what is working well and where further development will make a difference.

Your leadership will extend beyond the classroom. We want someone who will champion opportunities for students to experience History and Politics through visits, clubs, competitions, visiting speakers and other enrichment activities that broaden their horizons.

Why Herne Bay High School?

This role offers the scope to make a visible difference—to students’ experiences, to colleagues’ development and to the profile of History and Politics across the school.

You will benefit from:

  • Leadership responsibility with support: the opportunity to lead your subject while working closely with the Head of Faculty and Politics Curriculum Lead.

  • Teaching across Key Stages 3–5: the breadth to develop students’ interest from their first secondary History lessons through to advanced study.

  • Popular examination subjects: the opportunity to build on students’ enthusiasm for History at GCSE and A Level.

  • A voice in curriculum development: the chance to shape progression, assessment and enrichment, bringing your expertise and ideas to the role.

  • Professional growth: opportunities to strengthen your leadership through faculty planning, self-evaluation and the development of colleagues.

  • Recognition for your responsibilities: a salary on the Upper Pay Scale plus TLR2B.

Based in the Kent coastal town of Herne Bay, our school offers the opportunity to contribute to a local school community while developing your career in subject leadership.

Who we are looking for

You will be a qualified teacher and a strong classroom practitioner with secure subject knowledge, high expectations and a belief in every student’s capacity to succeed.

You will bring:

  • A passion for History and an enthusiasm for supporting Politics provision.

  • The ability to design and deliver challenging, accessible and engaging learning.

  • A clear understanding of curriculum progression and effective assessment.

  • A supportive, collaborative approach to leading and developing colleagues.

  • The confidence to turn evidence into practical improvements.

  • A commitment to safeguarding, inclusion and the wider life of the school.

Above all, you will inspire students and colleagues through your curiosity, energy and commitment to your subjects.
