On Wednesday 17th January, the Year 10 and 11 girls football team hosted Darrick Wood School at Herne Bay Sports Hub.
The games started in a competitive fashion with both teams out to try and score an early goal. It was HBHS who had the better of the chances during the opening period with Ffion coming close on two occasions. Darrick Wood had chances of their own, but the back line of Darcie, Alicia, Rosie and Amelia stood firm. Our girls started to gain momentum in the game with chances falling to Lexi and a chance for Paige who fired just over from the edge of the box, but we struggled to test the Darrick Wood goalkeeper. HBHS won a corner following some neat dribbling from Tiff, Lexi whipped in the corner to the front post, and it was met by Keira who headed home to take a 1-0 lead into half time.
A spirited team talk from Darrick Wood saw them start the second half much brighter. Their start was rewarded with a goal midway through the second half as Jess saved the initial shot, but the rebound fell kindly for the oncoming attacker who made the score 1-1. We had chances in the second half with Lexi and Tiff both coming close, but the strong defence of Darrick Wood stood tall and denied any clear-cut chances that we could create.
80 minutes passed and extra time loomed. A positive team talk and slight change to positions saw Alicia go upfront for the start of extra time, she used her energy and pace to apply pressure to the Darrick Wood defence. With a minute to go of the first half of extra time, Alicia chased down a loose ball and the clearance from the Darrick Wood goalkeeper hit Alicia and the ball bounced kindly into her path, and she finished into an open goal. Our girls managed to hold on for the second half of extra time and progressed into the girl’s county cup final for the first time in the school’s history.
The girls will play either Bullers Wood School or Bennett Memorial School in the final. The details will be published when we receive them. Well done girls!
