Our Crochet club has been running since October 2023 and has proved very popular with all year groups throughout the year.
Students have made fantastic progress by learning basic skills, making poppies to raise money for the poppy appeal last year, and also Christmas decorations which were sold via the school office to raise funds for Porchlight last Christmas. Our students are now confidently producing bags, jewellery, cuddly toys and other items on a weekly basis.
On Friday 19th July, members of the Crochet Club were invited to the ScrapStore in Ramsgate, which is run by East Kent Mencap. The proceeds from the ScrapStore, which is open to the public on Wednesday and Thursday each week, go to support people in East Kent with a learning disability.
The students attended a reward workshop run by Ms Reece. They crocheted some beautiful and functional items using yarn and other crafting materials that had been saved from landfill by the ScrapStore. In addition to using items from the store for their projects on the day, they were also allowed to select a generous amount of materials to take home and work with over the summer holidays.
Crochet club does not have any funding, and they are very happy to receive crochet hooks, yarn, buttons, curtain hoops and old pillows or cushions (washed first please) and any other crafting materials you no longer needs, so that we can continue with our exciting crochet projects for the next year.
In 2024/25 we will be taking on new members, and for the more skilled crocheters, we will be looking at how to turn their skills into a profit making hobby, whilst still organising some charity fund raising activities.
