What we teach in the classroom will help our pupils foster lifelong aspirations, goals and values. With this in mind, PSHE education isn’t just another school subject. It’s a chance to give every child and young person an equal opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge they need to thrive now and in the future. This includes helping them to deal with critical issues they face every day such as friendships, emotional wellbeing and change. And giving them a solid foundation for whatever challenging opportunities lie ahead, so they can face a world full of uncertainty with hope. From making informed decisions about alcohol to succeeding in their first job, PSHE education helps pupils prepare for all the opportunities, challenges, life decisions and responsibilities they'll face. This in turn achieves a 'virtuous circle', whereby pupils with better health and wellbeing can achieve better academically, and enjoy greater success. All of this means that, when taught well, PSHE education is popular with pupils, parents and schools. PSHE Association 2022
PSHE is an important part of the learning journey here at Herne Bay High School. We believe that PSHE & Citizenship helps to equip our students with the skills to live a healthy and safe life both now and in the future. We also believe that PSHE plays a vital role in helping our students to cope with the academic expectations of school life – helping them to reach their academic potential as best as possible.
Now more than ever we need to be aware of our personal wellbeing, our future aspirations, how to keep ourselves healthy and how to interact with those around us. All of these skills are discussed in PSHE & Citizenship to help our students be as prepared as possible for life ahead, not just for their exams. PSHE is a lesson where students have the opportunity to have their say on current topics, build key life skills and encourage social mobility.
Across all PSHE lessons – skills such as teamwork, communication, resilience, and critical thinking are facilitated. Topics covered throughout the key stages include mental health, physical health, online safety, future aspirations, healthy relationships, risk assessment and peer pressure.
