The Learning Resource Centre is at the heart of the school and is run by a professional librarian. The LRC has won a Kent Literacy Award for the best school library in Kent and the LRC Manager was a finalist in the national School Librarian of the Year Awards.
A lively calendar of events is provided throughout the year. The LRC is open during the school day and offers an excellent collection of factual and storybooks, magazines, ICT area, lecture theatre, and an informal seating area. At break, lunchtimes and after school pupils are welcome to come and relax over books or magazines or complete homework. There are popular lunchtime clubs; a Games Club including scrabble and chess plus a Homework Club with staff support for pupils tackling their homework. Keen readers have the opportunity to join the Carnegie Reading Group which shadows a national book award in the summer term.
The LRC is open from 08:30 until 16:00 on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; from 08:30 until 12:55 on Wednesday and from 08:30 until 15:20 on Friday. All students are welcome in the LRC at break and lunchtime to read books and magazines, play games and join in with LRC activities.
All pupils are automatically members of the LRC. Years 7, 8 and 9 may borrow up to 3 books at a time. Year 10 onwards may borrow up to 5 books at a time. Most books are issued for 2 weeks at a time.
The LRC is regularly used by a range of subject areas. Pupils get the opportunity to improve their research skills through LRC based lessons in collaboration with the Geography and Science Departments.
The LRC and the English Department work closely together to raise individual achievement through reading for enjoyment. This is most effective when reading is actively supported at home. All year 7, 8 and 9 pupils take part in the Accelerated Reader Programme when individual effort and achievement is celebrated. The aim is for all pupils to read for at least 20 minutes a day and to quiz regularly on their books to earn rewards and make progress in their reading.
